Clearly, there is a s***storm over Trump’s latest “alleged” comment regarding immigration. I highlight the word “alleged” because, once again, rather than deal with the serious issue at hand, people in a PRIVATE OVAL OFFICE MEETING go running to the media to make a big story about what was said. So, we’re left with the media saying the president said something disparaging about African countries and Haiti, the president denies saying it, but does NOT deny using tough language about it. (http://news.trust.org/item/20180112022611-rbq55)
If the folks wanting to have a serious discussion about immigration cared about the issue, they wouldn’t petulantly disrupt the process by immersing themselves in emotional outbursts about racism and hate. Of note, CNN used the word “s***hole” over 36 times since they’re so outraged about the use of the word. More later on what democrats have to say. During the second half of the first hour, we had a chat with Loretta Boniti, from Spectrum Cable. As always Loretta was on point spending a great deal of her time around the legislature, her perspective is always appreciated. We first discussed how NC lost out on the new Mazda/Toyota plant to Alabama despite the fact that it appears NC was willing to give away hundreds of millions of dollars more away in incentives (total of $1.5b for a plant worth only $1.6b). Alabama has allegedly offered a sum just over $700m (possibly more) but in the end the incentives weren’t the deciding factor. We also discussed the ongoing judicial involvement around redistricting of congressional seats and legislative seats as well. As folks are trying to decide to run, many aren’t sure which district will ultimately be where they live. It’s confusing, frustrating and the courts aren’t adding clarity to what they ultimately desire.
Loretta also discussed what the legislature and governor will likely focus on during this year’s political scene leading up to the elections and the degree to which education and judicial reform will take place.
The second hour brought more discussion about what political types have to say. Former Virginia Gov. Terry McAulliffe openly said he might physically assault the president in a forum if he stood too close to him. The host of the show, Chris Matthews, laughed (https://news.grabien.com/story-mcauliffe-says-hed-slug-trump-you-would-have-pick-him-floor) And Nancy Pelosi called the folks on the GOP side discussing immigration reform the “4. . . or 5 white guys. . . ” that might “open a hamburger stand.” Yep, that’s what passes for legitimate discussion and yet Trump is the one constantly out of bounds? We went through theme in the show that is now on the intellectual front about how the country seems to be devolving from rugged individualism to selfish individualism. It’s worth the read, a bit long and we truncated it for the purposes of the show. (https://www.the-american-interest.com/2018/01/08/an-emotional-america/)
And yes, we did discuss Nancy Pelosi calling the bonuses and new jobs “crumbs” that have resulted from the tax cut package passed by the GOP. Interestingly enough, this literally means that the Democrats have offered LESS THAN crumbs to the American public. In fact, they haven’t even been a seat at the table on virtually ANY issue over the past year. (http://www.businessinsider.com/nancy-pelosi-tax-bill-bonuses-crumbs-2018-1)
We touched briefly on Trump cancelling his planned trip to the UK to “ribbon cut” the opening of our new $1.2b embassy there. (http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-42657954) His explanation was about the waste involved in the embassy amidst the backdrop that the mayor of London and others wanted massive protests. In the midst of it all, former Mayor Boris Johnson called out the leftists for going after Trump saying it is a bad move going so far as to call the current mayor a “pompous popinjay” which is, I guess a British slam. (https://www.rt.com/uk/415702-johnson-trump-pompous-khan/)
Wrapping up the show on this great Friday, we reviewed a well done piece by Howard Kurtz over at FoxNews about the #NeverTrump movement being plagued by an emotional rather than intellectual bias that is starting to undermine their credibility. As issue after issue that #NeverTrumpers wish to see addressed ARE being addressed their emotions are getting in the way. (http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2018/01/12/are-nevertrumpers-being-consumed-by-their-own-fiery-denunciations.html)
Have a great weekend folks. . . and yes, it was fun in the new studio. . FB live coming soon!
